Austria coach leave after Euro 2012 failure

Austria coach Didi Constantini will leave when his contract ends in December following the team's failure to qualify for Euro 2012.


"The contract which expires on Dec. 31 this year will not be renewed," said the OEFB in a statement on its website (www.oefb.at) following a meeting between Constantini, 56, and federation president Leo Windtner.
"According to the timetable, the new coach should be established by the start of November with his debut in a friendly on Nov. 15."
Constantini, who replaced Karel Brueckner two years ago, has managed seven wins and three draws in 23 matches during which he has barred some of Austria's top players including midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz.
Tuesday's goalless draw at home to Turkey ended their chances of playing at Euro 2012 and maintained their record of having never reached the tournament through the qualifying competition.
On Friday, they were thrashed 6-2 in Germany, their sixth defeat in a row by their neighbours.
Austria's only appearance at the European championship was in 2008 when they qualified automatically as co-hosts with Switzerland. However, they were knocked out in the first round.
Austria's fortunes have waned over the last few years and they have not qualified for the World Cup since 1998.
Constantini will remain in charge for the two remaining games, away to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, in Euro qualifying Group A, although the OEFB said that if the new coach was found quickly, he could also take over for those games.

The Austrian federation (OEFB) said that the search for a new coach would begin immediately and Constantini's successor could make his debut in a friendly in November.

"It's obvious that we are in free fall. Also, the last two matches have shown that the team have lost their spirit and we had to react this way."

"After the latest round of qualifiers, the position of our team is not as comfortable as it was before, especially before the match against Bulgaria and then Wales," further explained FCSG secretary general Momir Durdevac, according to PA.

"It had appeared we would either qualify directly or at least finish second safely, and so become a play-off participant, but after the last two results we are now in a situation where we enter into the final round of qualifiers with a great deal of uncertainty.

"Analysing the reasons for this, the board concluded that the coach Zlatko Kranjcar had not performed to his best, especially in the last two matches, and unanimously decided to dismiss the coach.

"This decision is not easy, but we considered a number of reasons and this is the only possible and correct solution at this point."

Brnovic, who was Kranjcar's assistant, has been given the reigns of the team as they prepare for their upcoming qualifiers against Switzerland and England, and Savicevic is confident that the 44-year-old will not disappoint.

"He had a big football career and has a lot of experience as an assistant to Kranjaar and [Zoran] Filipovic," he enthused. "We believe that he will get us back on track."

Two match left of Montenegro against England in Podgorica on October 7 and four days later take on Switzerland in Basel.

The Metropolitan Police named the man as 44-year-old Michael Dye from Cardiff and said that six people, understood to be Welsh, had been arrested outside the ground before Tuesday's Group G match which England won 1-0.
"Police were called at approximately 19.20 (1820 GMT)...to an area outside Wembley Stadium following reports of an assault," a police statement said.

"Michael John Dye...suffered head injuries and was taken by London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital. He was pronounced dead at 20.50."
Local media quoted paramedics as saying Dye had also suffered a heart attack before being taken to hospital.

"It's a game of football at the end of the day and there's nothing more precious than life," Wales coach Gary Speed told Sky Sports News. "The players and the staff, we're all deeply saddened by the news that we found out after the game."

Dye was a Wales and Cardiff City fan, according to a statement on the Championship (second division) club's website (www.cardiffcityfc.co.uk), while local media reported he had worked as a mason for his city's council.

"Out of respect for the family of the supporter, the sensitivity of the situation and until full details and circumstances are ascertained, no statements will be made until deemed fit by proper channels," the Cardiff club said.
